Departmental Funding

At UC Berkeley

The Hopper-Dean Foundation has awarded $2 million over two years to UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) to support diversity initiatives in computer science. This funding builds upon a previous $1 million gift from the foundation in 2016, which helped develop pilot diversity programs within the department. CS Kickstart, a program that brings incoming first-year undergraduate women interested in computer science to campus one week early, will benefit from the increased funding. The grant has allowed CS Kickstart to expand its program and accommodate more participants, fostering a community of women in a male-dominated field. The Hopper-Dean Foundation's support acknowledges the department's progress in addressing the underrepresentation of women and minority students, and it demonstrates a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in computer science education at UC Berkeley.
